Updated Codes
Egress windows should provide trouble-free passage in case of emergency. Especially in case of fire, these windows would most likely be the safest and fastest ways out of your burning house. Nonetheless, they don’t only serve as an exit, but also an entrance.
This is why there are regulations in place to build every egress window in Grand Rapids, MI, the right way. If you live in an older home, the current size of your egress fixtures may no longer be up-to-date. Here are the updated codes in the city:
- Minimum width of opening: 20 inches
- Minimum height of opening: 24 inches
- Minimum net clear opening: 5.7 square feet (5 square feet for ground floor)
- Maximum sill height above floor: 44 inches
You can’t just hire any window contractor for this job; you should consult professionals who provide egress window installation on a regular basis. This way, you can rest assured that your replacement fixtures will be manufactured according to the right dimensions.
Every Window Style
The most popular style used for egress windows in Lansing, MIÂ is casement. The design lets the window be opened completely, providing a greater opening for the user. Double-hung and sliding fixtures are also top choices, but they have to be built bigger. These two only open half way, so they need to be taller and wider to meet the standards for opening size.
Basement Window Well Essentials
For the basement, an egress window is normally close to a well to provide a safe and convenient way out of the basement. Since it would be constructed below the ground, your window well has to meet special requirements to ensure there is no obstruction to the passage.
As your home is unique in many ways, you need to work with proficient professionals to study your home design first. That is why WMGB Home Improvement makes sure we can build your basement window well in compliance with the standards. We can do this without compromising your home’s architecture.
