Egress windows are basically emergency exits, regarded by many homeowners in the most utilitarian sense. There’s no reason you can’t add some style and improve its functionality, though, especially since it will be in your line of sight whenever you’re in your basement.

As a leading egress window provider in Grand Rapids and nearby areas, let WMGB Home Improvement share with you our different egress window options.

Requirements for Egress Windows

Most local building codes are adopted from the International Residential Code and likely require egress windows for basements in use a living space. You should be able to easily open it without keys or tools, and it must comply with the following requirements:

  • The minimum window opening should be 20 inches wide and 24 inches tall, with 5.7 square feet minimum net clear opening.

  • The sill height must be no higher than 44 inches above the floor.

  • The window well must have at least 9 square feet of floor space, at least 3 feet long per side, and a permanent ladder or steps if it’s more than 44 inches deep.

Egress Window Options

Our egress windows are designed to be used like regular ones, with easy to use mechanisms for emergency use. Whatever style you choose, our experts will do all the calculations and make sure that it is up to code.

  1. Egress casement windows – Casement windows strike the perfect balance of optimum natural lighting and ventilation. The familiar crank is there for easy one-handed operation while a special operator arm lets the windows quickly and fully open for emergency use.

  2. Egress in-swing windows – Our Astro in-swing egress windows look and operate like a typical double-hung window, but a latch at the bottom lets you quickly swing the entire window inward in case of emergency. The window assembly is fusion-welded for weathertightness and energy efficiency.

  3. Egress sliding windows – Choose our egress sliding windows if you want larger windows. The foolproof design needs no hidden latches nor special instructions: simply slide it open to use as an exit, as the extra-wide window is designed to be code-compliant. As a bonus, the bigger glass areas allow more natural light into your basement.

  4. Window wells – We offer window well options from manufacturers Boman Kemp, RockWell, and Bilco Scapewel. On top of preventing the soil from blocking the egress window, our window well options provide stylish and functional options, from ladder styles that maximize space to stylish stacked stone designs. We also offer custom landscaped wells if you have a specific design in mind.
