Basements that contain habitable space need an egress window according to the standards of the International Code Council. If you have a basement bedroom, game room, or home theater room, then you need to have emergency escape and rescue openings. To find the right egress window for your home, there are a few things you need to consider:
- Safety – Your egress window needs to have a minimum opening width of 20 inches and a minimum opening height of 24 inches. It also needs to have a minimum net clear opening of 5.7 square feet. The window well floor space needs to have a floor space of 9 square feet with minimum dimensions of 36 inches long and 36 inches wide. If the window well depth is more than 44 inches, then the window well needs to have a permanent ladder or steps. The window sill height must be no higher than 44 inches above the floor.
- Natural Light – Aside from meeting escape requirements, your window also needs to be able to provide your basement with adequate natural light. Sunlight can dramatically improve a basement’s mood and appearance. Natural light can make a basement feel more open and welcoming, and can also help lift the spirits of the occupants. Fortunately, we can install ENERGY STAR®-qualified egress windows that will brighten up your basement without affecting your energy bill.
- Ease of Use – It’s important for your egress windows to be convenient and easy to open and close if they are to serve their purpose as an escape route. That’s why we offer customers our Astro In-Swing egress window. This window looks like a regular double-hung window, but it can open like an in-swing door. It has an opening latch that is operable one-handed and does not open towards the egress well, making movement through the window easier.
