Fiberglass Insulation
Fiberglass insulation is a popular insulation material that is affordable and effective. It’s made from very fine strands of glass that work together to create a barrier that prevents heat from escaping your home. This material won’t burn, which is a plus, but it has its disadvantages. People can inhale these tiny fibers of glass, which is why fiberglass insulation is usually covered with something after it is installed. It’s also why fiberglass insulation is typically installed in areas where it won’t be disturbed, such as your attic.
With these precautions, fiberglass insulation won’t be a threat to your health. Fiberglass insulation also has an R-value between 2.1 to 2.17 per inch. This is a unit of thermal resistance that indicates how well a material will insulate. Fiberglass insulation manufacturer’s state that fiberglass will not settle over time, making it very effective. However, this requires the home insulation installers to have special training and tools to make sure that fiberglass is properly installed.
Cellulose Insulation
Like fiberglass insulation, cellulose is also affordable and effective. It is easier to install than fiberglass insulation and has a slightly higher R-value of 3 per inch. Cellulose also retains its insulating value no matter the temperature, unlike fiberglass which loses its value in extreme temperatures. Unfortunately, cellulose can settle over time if it is not properly installed. Cellulose is made from newspaper but is treated with fire-resistant chemicals. It is a very benign product and poses practically no ongoing health risk.
